Judges 11:17

Konteks
11:17 Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please allow us 10  to pass through your land.” But the king of Edom rejected the request. 11  Israel sent the same request to the king of Moab, but he was unwilling to cooperate. 12  So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

[2:1]  1 sn See Exod 14:19; 23:20.

[2:1]  2 tn Heb “the land that I had sworn to your fathers.”

[2:1]  3 tn Or “covenant” (also in the following verse).

[7:5]  4 tn Heb “the people.”

[7:5]  5 tn Heb “Everyone who laps with his tongue from the water, as a dog laps, put him by himself, as well as the one who gets down on his knees to drink.”

[7:25]  6 sn The names Oreb and Zeeb, which mean “Raven” and “Wolf” respectively, are appropriate because the Midianites had been like scavengers and predators to Israel.

[7:25]  7 tn The Hebrew text repeats the verb “executed.” This has not been repeated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[7:25]  8 tn Heb “Midian.”

[7:25]  9 tn Heb “beyond the Jordan.” The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text but has been supplied in the translation for clarity (also in 8:4).

[11:17]  10 tn Heb “me.” (Collective Israel is the speaker.)

[11:17]  11 tn Heb “did not listen.”

[11:17]  12 tn Heb “Also to the king of Moab he sent, but he was unwilling.”

[13:14]  13 tn Heb “eat.”

[13:14]  14 tn Heb “eat anything unclean.” Certain foods were regarded as ritually “unclean” (see Lev 11). Eating such food made one ritually “contaminated.”

[14:9]  15 tn Heb “went.” Samson apparently went home to his parents before going to Timnah for the marriage. Seeing and tasting the honey appears to encourage Manoah to go with his son to Timnah. Perhaps both Samson and his father viewed the honey as a good omen of future blessing. Possibly Samson considered it a symbol of sexual pleasure or an aphrodisiac. Note the use of honey imagery in Song 4:11 and 5:1.

[14:9]  16 sn Touching the carcass of a dead animal undoubtedly violated Samson’s Nazirite status. See Num 6:6.

[19:11]  17 tn Heb “and the day was descending greatly.”

[19:11]  18 tn Or “young man.”

[19:11]  19 tn Heb “turn aside” (also in the following verse).

[21:5]  20 tn Heb “A great oath there was concerning the one who did not go up before the Lord at Mizpah, saying, ‘He must surely be put to death.’”
